What happened after Restaurant Makeover?
Via Oliveto was a family restaurant in Toronto. According to the Via Oliveto Bakery's own profile on 100km Foods, Italian-born Pasquale Zappia and his wife, Mayra, opened it in 1988 as a combined restaurant and bakery, with Pasquale running the bakery and Mayra running the restaurant. ChefDB lists Pasquale Zappia as chef and owner at 376 Bloor Street West. The episode, S1E6, aired 2005-05-10. Google Play's description says a family restaurant was barely surviving and that its renovation was complicated by a relative who opposed the changes. Rotten Tomatoes lists a renovation. RealityTVWorld's show page credits chef Rene Chauvin and designer Glen Peloso.
We found no source that says what the chef and designer changed, so we cannot describe the menu, decor or staffing changes, or the relaunch. The show's format, per RealityTVWorld and Wikipedia's article on the series, gave each team a very limited budget and time, with the owners' funds matched up to $20,000 (later $15,000). No source we read names both the show and the Bloor Street address; the match rests on the name, the city, the family-run character and the ChefDB dates.
The 100km Foods profile says that after 19 years the family sold the restaurant, and that sons Patrick and Adriano joined the bakery, which moved to a 2,000-square-foot facility in Toronto and began packaging flatbread for retail in 2007. Baking Business, in an article dated 2023-09-11 that the page labels as sponsored, reported that the bakery moved to an 8,000-square-foot facility in Vaughan, Ontario, in 2009; the 100km Foods profile instead lists a 17,000-square-foot facility in Barrie. The two sources differ on location, and neither is about the restaurant.
ChefDB, whose entry was last updated 2007-03-12, lists the Bloor Street West restaurant for 1988 to 2007 and carries a 2007 closings tag, though it does not say outright that the restaurant closed. We found no source on what operates at 376 Bloor Street West today.
