What happened after Kitchen Nightmares?
Ms. Jean's Southern Cuisine, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, was opened in 2000 by Jean Gould, a former special-education teacher who put her life savings into the restaurant at the encouragement of members of her church; it had previously operated as Jean's Soul Food Restaurant. Ramsay's visit, for what was his first trip to the Pittsburgh area for the show, found a restaurant with a chronically late and inattentive staff more interested in their phones than customers, and employees who told Ramsay that Gould herself had, in the show's words, "an attitude problem" toward both them and diners. Ramsay found Gould's pork chops, ribs, macaroni and cheese, and sweet tea unappealing, and the episode built to a staff meeting where Ramsay showed a compilation of customer complaints about "Ms. Mean." Gould broke down during filming, saying through tears that she did not know what she would do if she lost the business she had built with her life savings. Ramsay gave the restaurant a full interior and menu overhaul; the relaunch had at least one rocky moment, but staff pulled through under Gould's renewed leadership.
What has happened since: Mashed reported, on December 17, 2023, that Ms. Jean's kept operating for about a decade after the episode -- Facebook activity on one of the restaurant's pages continued into 2019, and a second page posted as recently as May 1, 2022 -- before closing later that year. According to a Facebook post from Trevis Gould, who identified himself as Jean's son, the restaurant held its final Sunday buffet on October 23, 2022, followed by posts through October 30, 2022 advertising restaurant and kitchen equipment for sale. No new brick-and-mortar location had been announced by the end of 2022. Gould has since been referenced in her son's posts advertising a Ms. Jean's Southern Cuisine catering service and, later, a dessert-catering venture, including a catered event at an American Legion post on August 6, 2023.
