On the "Timeless" episode, which aired 2010-09-13, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives featured The General Store and Post Office Tavern's comfort food, including fried chicken and lemon chess pie. Chef Gillian Clark and partner Robin Smith opened the Silver Spring, Maryland restaurant in January 2009; Clark had previously run Colorado Kitchen in Washington, D.C. According to the Washington Post's "All We Can Eat" blog, the restaurant closed on 2011-03-23. Bethesda Magazine reported on 2011-03-24 that the owners posted on Facebook that their landlord had not paid back taxes and the county was taking back the building, forcing the closure. Bethesda Magazine also reported the pair planned to open a new restaurant, The Kitchen on K Street, that spring. Bethesda Magazine noted the restaurant had built a devoted following for its cooking even as it earned a reputation for unwelcoming service, a tension the coverage traced back to Clark and Smith's inexperience running a hospitality business.
