What happened after Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares?
The Runaway Girl was a Sheffield restaurant and live-music venue on Arundel Street, owned by Justin Rowntree, when it appeared in the Channel 4 special Ramsay's Great British Nightmare, aired on 2009-01-30 alongside the Devon rescue of The Dovecote Bistro. The Yorkshire Post reported on 2020-01-10 that Rowntree bought the building in 2005 and opened it as a live-music venue under that name.
The problems: According to Wikipedia's episode list, the name and look of the place resembled a strip club, food was pre-cooked rather than prepared fresh, the kitchen was underfunded, and loud live music annoyed diners. Head chef Richie, who was Justin's best friend, threatened to quit, and a mystery-diner service in which cutlery was forgotten produced a harsh review. The Star reported on 2021-10-08 that the episode contained an estimated 310 bleeped expletives.
What the rescue changed: Ramsay refurbished the restaurant, renamed it Silversmiths, banned live music and moved the menu to modern British cooking, per Wikipedia's episode list.
The relaunch and revisit: A second mystery diner gave a positive review before the revisit. Justin kept to the changes, and Richie found a renewed enthusiasm for food, according to the list.
The Yorkshire Post reported on 2020-01-10 that Silversmiths was listed in the Good Food Guide for three years and won several awards, that Rowntree sold the business in 2017, and that the restaurant had two owners in two years before new owners, Rick Bailey and Matt Ray, refurbished the premises and planned a business club with free networking events. The Star reported on 2019-09-20 that the restaurant had closed suddenly at the end of July 2019, with a Facebook post citing flooding, and that the company holding the premises license had entered voluntary liquidation. The restaurant's own website lists menus labeled October 2026, December 2026 opening hours and online booking, gives the address as 111 Arundel Street, Sheffield S1 2NT, and presents Silversmiths as part of Ascent Leisure Group.
