What happened after Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares?

La Gondola was an Italian hotel and restaurant on Osmaston Road in Derby, owned by Daniela Bayfield, when Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (Channel 4) aired its episode on 2006-03-14, part of a run of episodes broadcast in February and March of that year. The program presented a business stuck in an earlier era. According to Wikipedia's episode list for the series, the dining room and the silver service were dated, the venue depended on function bookings, dishes were priced too low, and the kitchen leaned on shortcuts such as canned tuna, a bought-in pie and instant soup. Head chef Steve Straughan was shown lacking drive and having trouble communicating with his team. TheTVDB's listing for the episode says the hotel's best days were in the 1970s and that Ramsay set out to bring the staff, decor and food up to date and win customers back into the dining room.

What the rescue changed: Wikipedia's episode list says Ramsay swapped a complicated menu for a simpler one, refreshed the dining room and brought back flambé cooking at the table. The relaunch put that smaller, simpler offering in front of diners. By the time the program checked back, Steve had left, and the list says Daniela went through several chefs before hiring a new one.

The Caterer reported on 2007-07-19 that Bayfield's Ristorante La Gondola on Osmaston Road had closed and was set to go into liquidation, with a creditors' meeting called for August. The article said Ramsay's advice and the television publicity had given the restaurant an initial boost, but continuing cash-flow problems forced it to close, and it dated Ramsay's involvement to June 2005, shortly after the restaurant opened. Google's listing for La Gondola Hotel Ristorante at 220 Osmaston Road, Osmaston, Derby DE23 8JX, was marked permanently closed in October 2026. The listing's street and city match the location named in The Caterer's report.
