Is Bel Aire Still Open? Kitchen Nightmares Update (Astoria, NY)

Bel Aire Diner has operated in the Astoria section of Queens since 1965 and was featured as the Season 8 premiere of Kitchen Nightmares, filmed in May 2023 and airing September 25, 2023. The diner is a family business run by siblings Kalergis ("Kal") and Peter Dellaportas, with sister Theoni also involved, as their parents Archie and Patricia stepped back from day-to-day operations after decades running the restaurant. The episode frames unresolved personal tension between the brothers, compounded by their parents' retirement, as central to the restaurant's problems alongside kitchen dysfunction.

Gordon Ramsay found a sprawling 40-page menu, a chaotic kitchen, and a stock refrigerator holding spoiled food. He pushed Kal and Peter to work through their conflict as a condition of saving the business, and the production trimmed the menu, reorganized kitchen systems, and refreshed the decor as part of the relaunch. In the weeks after the episode aired, a review roundup published by the entertainment site Mashed in November 2023 characterized new Yelp reviews of the diner as mostly negative, describing customer complaints about food and service quality despite the on-air changes.

Kitchen Nightmares fan sites that follow the season have continued to list Bel Aire as active in the years since. The diner's own website, which carries a 2026 copyright and an active online-ordering system, describes it as Astoria's longest-running diner, open 365 days a year, and still run as a family business serving an extensive American comfort-food menu. A Yelp listing for the diner's address, updated as of September 2026, likewise shows continuing customer reviews and posted hours. Separately, according to Patch, the New York City Health Department ordered Bel Aire temporarily shut in October 2022, about seven months before Ramsay's visit and unrelated to the show, after an inspection found pest conditions, food held at unsafe temperatures, and other violations; the diner addressed the closure as a "deep cleaning" per signage shown in a photo circulated on Reddit at the time.
