What happened after Best Thing I Ever Ate?
Buttermilk Channel was an American bistro on Court Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, known for a comfort-food menu, weekend brunch, and a communal table that drew a loyal neighborhood following. The restaurant opened in 2008 and operated for 16 years under sole owner Doug Crowell, who also co-owned the French-American restaurant French Louie in Boerum Hill. Gothamist reported on December 25, 2024, that Crowell was closing Buttermilk Channel, with the restaurant's last day of business on New Year's Eve 2024; Crowell told the outlet, "It's just the time to close."
Yelp's listing for the restaurant, updated August 2026, still marks it as permanently closed at the Court Street address. Two licensed outposts of Buttermilk Channel in Japan, operated by a separate Japanese restaurant company under Crowell's creative oversight, remained open according to the same Gothamist report. The initially matched address, matched to an unrelated Park Slope bar, has been corrected to the restaurant's actual Court Street location.
