What happened after Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares?
La Riviera was a fine-dining restaurant in Inverness, Scotland, and the fourth episode of the second series of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, which Channel 4 aired on 2005-06-14. TheTVDB's listing describes a restaurant with a talented head chef and capable staff where local residents did not come and the dining room sat empty. Wikipedia's article on the series says the cooking was technically strong but over-complicated and costly.
Ramsay's rescue, as Wikipedia summarizes it, produced a more cost-effective menu and a redesigned restaurant. The article says a caption at the start of the episode noted that the restaurant had been renamed Abstract shortly before broadcast, and that the follow-up episode, "La Riviera Revisited," aired on 2006-12-12, carried a caption saying the restaurant was by then called Abstract. The same article says the owner was still using the new menu at that revisit.
The List, in an issue dated March 2007, reviewed a new Edinburgh branch of Abstract and described the Inverness flagship as being at the Glenmoriston Town House hotel. It called Abstract one of the few success stories of the television series and said the editors of the 2007 Michelin guide had called the Inverness restaurant a rising star.
The Glenmoriston Town House Hotel's home page, as of October 2026, describes a four-star city-centre hotel with 30 bedrooms and a piano bar. Its website, which carries a 2026 copyright, lists an in-house restaurant called Contrast Brasserie at 20 Ness Bank, describes it as independent and family-run, and gives lunch, bar-food and dinner hours, including Monday to Saturday lunch from noon to 2:30 p.m. and Sunday service from 1 p.m. The page does not mention Abstract or La Riviera.
The Press and Journal reported on 2023-06-14 that Barry Larsen had died on June 11, describing him as owner of the Glenmoriston Town House Hotel and of the Contrast restaurant and naming Abstract only as the Ness Bank restaurant Gordon Ramsay visited in 2005. Abstract no longer appears among the hotel's restaurants: the hotel's website, as of October 2026, lists Contrast Brasserie as its only restaurant.
La Riviera Revisited, aired on 2006-12-12, was Ramsay's return to the Inverness restaurant first featured in the 2005 series of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (Channel 4). Wikipedia's episode list describes the original visit: head chef Loïc Lefebvre, a French chef working for owner Barry Larsen, cooked technically skilled food that was over-complicated and costly to produce, and Ramsay doubted it would have wide appeal even in a larger city. To help the team understand local tastes, Ramsay took them to a local football match and later had them wear kilts at the relaunch. He then worked with Loïc on a refined but affordable menu aimed at local diners.
The revisit: TheTVDB's listing for the follow-up says Ramsay returned to find the restaurant renamed Abstract, described as a fine dining restaurant in Inverness that was planning to expand, with Loïc still in the kitchen and promoted. Wikipedia's episode list says the new menu was still in use.
The expansion plans: Wikipedia's article on Loïc Lefebvre says Larsen renamed La Riviera Abstract and opened a second restaurant, Contrast, next door in June 2006, and that Loïc moved to Edinburgh in March 2007 to help open a second Abstract. The same article says he returned to France in May 2007 after a disagreement with Larsen, and later opened a restaurant in Colmar that received a Michelin star in 2011.
The Scotsman reported on 2010-01-12 that Ramsay had told Larsen an Edinburgh branch would never work, that Larsen opened it in 2007 anyway, and that the Edinburgh restaurant, on Castle Terrace, stopped trading on 2009-12-31 after just under three years. The Scotsman quoted a source calling the restaurant not busy enough to remain viable, and Larsen said the move to Edinburgh had been the right decision at the time and that he would make the same choice again. The paper added that the Inverness branch was continuing. Wikipedia's article on Larsen also lists the Scotsman's 2010-01-12 report among its sources for the Edinburgh closure.
