What happened after Best Thing I Ever Ate?

Food Network's Best Thing I Ever Ate featured Prune, a 30-seat East Village bistro, in a 'Between Bread' segment on sandwiches. Prune was opened by chef Gabrielle Hamilton in 1999 at 54 E 1st St and drew acclaim from critics and other chefs over two decades, according to The Counter. The Counter reported that Hamilton wrote about permanently closing the restaurant in April 2020, after the space had been shut since the pandemic closures of March 2020. EV Grieve reported in February 2023 that renovation work was visible inside and outside the space, and that ownership declined to comment on whether the restaurant might reopen. Google Places lists the business as permanently closed.
