Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives featured the Rock Café in Stroud, Oklahoma in the 'Route 66' episode, visiting the historic sandstone cafe built along the Mother Road. According to Wikipedia, the restaurant takes its name from the local sandstone used in its 1936-1939 construction, and proprietor Dawn Welch — selected by The Oklahoman as Oklahoma's 2009 Woman of the Year and the real-life basis for animated character Sally Carrera in the Pixar film Cars — has long promoted Route 66 tourism in Oklahoma. A 2008 fire heavily damaged the cafe, and historic preservationist David Burke led repairs that allowed it to reopen on May 29, 2009; a cookbook written during the rebuilding effort was published that November.
