What happened after Kitchen Nightmares?

Zocalo was a Mexican restaurant in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood, run by husband-and-wife owners Gregory and Mary Russell, who met while working there -- Greg tending bar and Mary making tortillas -- before marrying and buying the business. Zocalo appeared in the March 30, 2012 episode of Kitchen Nightmares (Philadelphia Magazine's later coverage cited March 23, 2012 as the air date). The episode showed a restaurant roughly $750,000 in debt, with Greg working constantly and Mary managing day-to-day operations in a way employees found difficult; the couple's two daughters, who also worked at Zocalo, were caught between them, with one telling Ramsay the business was "destroying the family."

Ramsay reworked the food, lowered menu prices he judged too high, and pushed the family toward better communication; by the end of the episode, according to the network's own recap, service had grown smoother and the couple's partnership had improved. What has happened since: less than a year later, Philadelphia Magazine reported, on February 13, 2013, that Zocalo had closed. The Russells did not respond to the magazine's calls and emails seeking comment; most of the restaurant's contents appeared to have been removed, and its phone number was no longer working, though the website remained online.

The magazine's review of court records found a $40,000 Philadelphia tax lien, more than $28,000 in federal tax liens, and a $39,000 confession of judgment entered against Gregory Russell, on top of what the report described as substantial additional revolving debt. The same report noted that Zocalo's closure left only Chiarella's, another Philadelphia-area restaurant Ramsay had visited around the same time, still trading normally. In an interview with Philly.com published a few days after the episode aired, co-owner Mary Russell told the outlet that outside help was sometimes necessary to learn how to run a business. A Yelp listing for the address remains marked permanently closed as of a July 2026 update.
