What happened after Kitchen Nightmares?
Michon's was a smoked-meat and seafood restaurant in College Park, Georgia, opened by Al Wilson in 2002. After a collapsed lung forced Wilson to step back from daily operations on doctors' orders, he handed control to his daughter Natalie, whose hands-off approach, she described getting frustrated over work problems as 'wasted energy', let standards slide well before Gordon Ramsay's visit for the episode that aired January 13, 2012. Customers complained about long waits for food that servers privately admitted was well below par, largely because dishes were routinely microwaved rather than freshly prepared, even though the restaurant owned two high-end smokers worth roughly $17,000 apiece. Ramsay's own meal included chicken wings reheated from the previous day, a rotten tomato hidden in a salad, and dry ribs and cornbread; in the kitchen, he found hundreds of pre-cooked wings held for reheating and no head chef among the restaurant's six cooks, each working however they pleased.
Ramsay had the kitchen designate a head chef from among the existing cooks, brought in one of his own barbecue specialists to streamline the menu around freshly smoked meats, and pushed Natalie to take an active role managing the floor rather than staying in the back office with the payroll. The relaunch, evaluated by invited barbecue critics and local guests, went smoothly once early service hiccups were resolved, and Natalie appeared to staff and family to have taken the lesson to heart.
The improvement did not last. According to Gazette Review (2023-08-02), Michon's closure came in 2015, about three years after the episode aired, as Al Wilson's declining health made his continued involvement difficult and consistency problems persisted despite the post-Ramsay menu changes. Wilson died in 2018, per the same report. As of a 2024 update from Geeks Around Globe, the College Park space has since been occupied by an unrelated business, an Ethiopian restaurant called Bole.
