What happened after Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives?

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives visited Ataula in Portland's Northwest District for the episode "From Port to Port," which aired November 4, 2016, spotlighting the restaurant's Spanish and Catalan tapas. Husband-and-wife team Jose Chesa and Cristina Baez opened the restaurant in 2013, and Chesa's cooking there later earned him a James Beard Foundation Award nomination for Best Chef: Northwest. According to Willamette Week, published April 22, 2021, Ataula closed permanently after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the restaurant to shut its doors in March 2020, with the owners concluding they could not sustain operations. Portland Monthly reported the same closure in an April 2021 article, and a Yelp listing for the address remained marked permanently closed as of a July 2026 update.
