Black Pearl was a lobster and seafood restaurant near Chelsea in Manhattan when it appeared in the fifth episode of Kitchen Nightmares season 2, airing September 25, 2008. The restaurant was run by three co-owners, David, Greg, and Brian, who by the account given on the show were rarely all present at the same time, and staff described inconsistent oversight as a source of the restaurant's problems. Gordon Ramsay sampled a clam chowder he found watery, an overly spiced mussel dish, and several versions of the restaurant's signature lobster roll, disputing one owner's explanation for why the Maine-style roll was served unseasoned. He also found the kitchen serving Canadian lobster without disclosing the substitution and raised the practice with the ownership group. Ramsay's inspection coincided with a dinner service in which all three owners were present at once, a rarity staff said had not happened in some time, and one table's complaint about sandy mussels was met by one of the owners insisting in person that the dish was meant to be served that way. Afterward, Ramsay had staff submit anonymous questions to the owners, using their answers to argue the restaurant lacked a clear general manager, and had the three owners sign a written agreement naming co-owner Greg to that role. Overnight, the design team reworked the dining room and added a novelty game letting diners try to catch their own lobster. On relaunch night, one of the other owners remained visibly critical of the changes in front of staff and guests, a tension that ran through the rest of the episode even as service ultimately improved.
