What happened after Kitchen Nightmares?

Handlebar was a dated bar and restaurant in Mount Sinai, New York bought by former construction worker Bill Leroy and his wife Carolyn, whose chef, Melissa, said on air that she had never had a real passion for cooking and did not consider herself a chef. Ramsay's most memorable verdict was reserved for the filet mignon fondue, which he compared to poorly disguised dog food. He did find one genuine bright spot, the clam chowder, a compliment that visibly surprised even Melissa, but the seafood crepes turned out to be filled with imitation crab, and the fondue itself was beyond rescuing as a dish.

When Ramsay pressed Bill to simply admit to his staff that the food was not good enough, so the kitchen could move forward together, Bill shut down instead, telling Ramsay he would not let his own dog speak to him the way Ramsay just had, and walked out of the building, leaving Carolyn to continue the visit alone. Ramsay's changes centered on retraining the kitchen around a smaller, better-executed menu built off the chowder's success rather than the fondue's shortcomings, while pushing Bill and Carolyn to take a more active, hands-on role in daily service. Handlebar's rescue appeared to work, at least for a time: a fan site, rescueshowguide.com, reports that Ramsay revisited the bar a second time not long before it closed and found it running well.

Newsweek's February 18, 2026 report on Kitchen Nightmares restaurants nonetheless lists Handlebar among the Season 2 businesses reported to have closed, and the same fan site dates that closure to 2009, roughly a year after the September 2008 broadcast, without identifying a specific reason. The bar operated at 23 State Route 25A in Mount Sinai. No later reporting on Bill, Carolyn, or Melissa was found.
