What Happened to Jazz Katz After Bar Rescue? (Southfield, MI)

Jazz Katz was a jazz- and piano-themed bar in Southfield, Michigan, that appeared on Bar Rescue's "Boss Lady Blues," which aired December 6, 2015. Coverage of the episode from the trade outlet Bar & Restaurant News, published under the headline "Jazz Katz Needs Serious Therapy," ties the bar's problems to strained management under its female owner-operator, consistent with the episode's title, though a full account of the on-air conflict was not available in the sources reviewed for this record. Jon Taffer's team retrained staff and reworked the bar's live-music and drink program, relaunching the business under a new name, Back Beat Piano Bar, intended to sharpen the venue's identity around live piano entertainment.

The relaunch did not hold. According to the fan site Reality TV Updates and the blog Bar Rescue Updates, Back Beat Piano Bar closed in 2016, not long after the televised makeover, following an unsuccessful crowdfunding campaign the operators ran in an attempt to cover overdue rent at the location. A Yelp listing for the address, updated in April 2026, shows "JAZZ KATZ - CLOSED" at 29555 Northwestern Hwy in Southfield, with the listing continuing to use the bar's original, pre-rescue name even though the business had operated as Back Beat Piano Bar at the time of its closure.

A comedy club was reported to have occupied the same suite at some point in the years after Jazz Katz/Back Beat Piano Bar stopped operating, though that report has not been independently confirmed. No reporting found in researching this record describes any legal or regulatory dispute connected to the closure; the available accounts describe a straightforward inability to keep up with rent after sales did not recover following the relaunch. As of the Yelp listing updated in April 2026, the address is not operating as a bar under either name.
