What happened after Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back?
M'Dears Bakery & Bistro is a South Los Angeles soul-food restaurant and bakery that owner Carrie Reese opened in 2002, after first building a following selling desserts at local jazz and blues festivals starting in 1991; by the time of Gordon Ramsay's 2018 visit, Reese's daughters Tiffany and Marissa were helping run the business alongside her, though long-standing strain in the family relationships was affecting how the restaurant operated. Ramsay, disguised as a camera operator, ordered food to go from the small dining room and found the chicken bland; hidden-camera footage later shown to the group documented spoiled food, kitchen items running out mid-service, and inconsistent customer service. During the process, Ramsay worked through long-standing family tension between Reese and her daughter Tiffany, and the two worked through some of that on camera, including baking together, before the relaunch.
For the relaunch, Ramsay's team refreshed the dated pink dining room with warmer colors and helped the family develop a more focused menu. During the relaunch dinner, Reese took on an expediting role in the kitchen, and with reminders from Ramsay to stay supportive rather than critical, the team got food out to diners promptly; visiting chef Jet Tila was among those impressed by the results.
Since the episode aired in March 2019, M'Dears has continued operating at the same Western Avenue address, and in March 2023 the Los Angeles community paper Our Weekly covered a grand-reopening event at the restaurant featuring Reese and her grandsons. The restaurant's own website remains active with a current menu, online ordering through DoorDash and Uber Eats, a senior-meal delivery program, and press coverage of a more recent promotional visit from a Los Angeles Rams player as part of a citywide campaign highlighting Black-owned restaurants. A Yelp listing for the address was last updated in September 2026 with no closure notice, consistent with continued operation under the same ownership and name.
