Los Toros Mexican Restaurant has served Chatsworth, in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, since 1967, when it was purchased by the father of owner Nick Sr., who by the time of Gordon Ramsay's November 2018 visit ran it with his wife Lucia while grooming their children to eventually take over. Once the only Mexican restaurant in the area, the business faced growing competition and financial strain. Ramsay, dining in disguise as a grandfather with a fabricated family, found a bright, dated interior, an overloaded menu, and tacos, tamales, and enchiladas he found unappetizing. Hidden-camera footage shown to the family and staff documented unsafe food temperatures and moldy ingredients, and included a clip in which one of Nick Sr.'s daughters described a past incident in which customers required hospital treatment after eating there, a claim Nick Sr. initially denied. A kitchen walkthrough turned up expired and rotten food, and Ramsay noted that the line cooks had never been taught basic knife skills, relying instead on a mechanical chopping tool.

For the relaunch, Ramsay's team introduced a simplified menu, trained the family's adult children in cooking and plating, and had the kitchen prepare the full menu as a test before opening night; several dishes came out cold or undercooked during that rehearsal. The relaunch dinner drew a positive response from diners and visiting food critics, though the kitchen struggled at times with timing.

Three months after the episode, the family reported that Ramsay's dishes remained on the menu, that hygiene issues had not recurred, and that a new food-labeling system was in place. According to a May 2025 news report from the Los Angeles outlet WhatNow, Los Toros was ordered temporarily closed by Los Angeles County Public Health after a routine inspection on May 25, 2025 found a vermin infestation along with secondary maintenance violations; the restaurant was directed to correct the violations before a follow-up inspection could allow it to reopen for normal service. No subsequent report of a permanent closure was identified, and business listings for the address continued to show regular operating hours as of September 2026.
