What happened after Kitchen Nightmares?

Sushi Ko was a Japanese restaurant that chef Akira Hatae opened in Thousand Oaks, California, naming it after the well-known Bel Air restaurant where he had worked his way up over roughly 25 years before starting his own place with his wife Lisa, according to Mashed's 2023 account of the episode. By the time of Gordon Ramsay's 2009 visit, the restaurant and the couple's marriage were both under severe strain: Lisa was openly frustrated with Akira, and their adult children, Hana and Sammy, described the toll the business's decline had taken on the family. Recap sources describe Ramsay being served a cold, over-salted miso soup, a green tower salad containing a hair, frozen and chewy salmon sashimi, and a "sushi pizza," a mix of salmon, crab, cheese, and mayonnaise over sushi rice, so unpalatable that Ramsay called it "an insult to Japanese culture" and spit it out.

A kitchen inspection turned up staff working without hairnets, a broken refrigerator and fryer, and mayonnaise stored at room temperature. Ramsay had new refrigeration and cooking equipment installed at no cost to the family, redesigned the dining room, and simplified the menu, and coached Akira directly to help rebuild his confidence in the kitchen; the relaunch drew an unusually full house and was, according to the recap, a success on the night itself. Off camera, the family also searched for a cheaper location to help the business's finances, without success, according to Mashed.

Sushi Ko did not survive long after the visit. According to a contemporaneous blog post from the Hatae family's son, Sammy, quoted by Reality TV Updates, the restaurant "shut its doors" in August 2009, before the Kitchen Nightmares episode had even aired the following May, with Sammy citing the recession as the main factor; Mashed's account, also citing Reality TV Revisited, gives the same 2009 pre-broadcast closing. A separate Dexerto retrospective instead describes the closure as coming a few months after the May 2010 broadcast; this summary follows the family's own contemporaneous statement as the more specific and closer-in-time source.

The Thousand Oaks space Sushi Ko had occupied was used afterward by a delicatessen, then a burger chain location, and most recently, per Reality TV Updates' 2023 update, a California Pizza Kitchen. Akira later worked in the cosmetics export business, and Lisa has since worked in catering and hospitality roles, including at Pepperdine University, according to the same source.
