What happened after Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives?
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives visited this Kahului plate-lunch spot for the 'Soakin' Up Maui' episode, aired 2016-07-01, which showcased Da Kitchen's local comfort food and oversized island-style portions. Da Kitchen served dishes such as chicken katsu, kalbi ribs, loco moco, and deep-fried Spam musubi at 425 Koloa St in Kahului, according to Hawaii Magazine. Maui Now reported on 2020-07-13 that Da Kitchen would close its Kahului location on July 22, 2020, after 20 years in business, as the pandemic's economic effects hit all three of the company's locations.
KHON2 also covered the Kahului closure around the same time. Hawaii Magazine reported that co-founder Les Tomita reopened a smaller Da Kitchen Café in Kihei Center in May 2021, sharing kitchen space with Piko Hawaiian Style Café and operating takeout-only hours, but no location reopened at the original Kahului address.
