What happened after Food Paradise?
Food Paradise's episode "California Dreamin'" (S14E1) featured Hawker Fare, chef James Syhabout's Mission District restaurant known for Laotian and Isaan-style Thai dishes such as crispy rice salad and Hainanese-style poached chicken and rice. The restaurant, at 680 Valencia Street in San Francisco, also housed an upstairs cocktail lounge called Holy Mountain. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Hawker Fare closed permanently on January 29, 2023, after nearly nine years in business. The SF Standard reported that staff were given only one day's notice before the closure.
SFGate reported that Syhabout cited declining post-pandemic business, down about 50 percent from pre-pandemic levels, alongside rising food, labor, and operating costs as reasons for closing the restaurant. The Holy Mountain lounge closed along with the restaurant. The Google Places record originally pulled for this address instead matched Wayfare Tavern, an unrelated restaurant on Pine Street; Hawker Fare's own address and coordinates were confirmed separately for this record.
