What happened after Bar Rescue?
Pat's Cocktails in Valley Village, California, was the focus of the April 20, 2014 episode "When Life Doesn't Hand You Lemons." Owner Ray Suruli had run the bar for about 24 years before stepping back in retirement and handing daily operation to Jimmy, an employee who had initially performed well but, after marrying, spent much of his shift time with his wife at the bar instead of managing staff or inventory. Recon observed Jimmy and his wife engaged in extended displays of affection at the bar while paying customers went unattended, and two bartenders, Vivian and Danielle, were shown handling most day-to-day service themselves; the two had contacted the show for help. In a test devised by the rescue team, one bartender was instructed to give away a large number of free drinks over several hours to see whether Jimmy would notice the lost revenue; he did not. Separately, Suruli was confronted over his continued high personal spending, including an expensive car, while staff told him they sometimes covered stock costs out of pocket.
Rather than fully rebrand the bar, the show made a narrower change, adding "A Mixology Bar" to the existing Pat's Cocktails name. Mixologist Russell Davis introduced a revised cocktail menu and retrained the bartending staff, and Jimmy's wife agreed to begin training as a staff member rather than a bystander. At the standard six-week follow-up, sales were reported up more than 39%.
By around 2022, the business changed both its name and its ownership, operating today as Pat's Off Laurel. A patron's account relayed in an online comment thread (not independently verified) quoted a current bartender as saying founding owner Ray Suruli is no longer involved with the business. As of mid-2026, Yelp's business listing for Pat's Off Laurel at the same Riverside Drive address shows dozens of reviews with content updated as recently as June 2026, describing a cocktail bar serving flatbread and other food alongside sports programming, and the venue maintains an active Instagram account under the same name.
