What happened after Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back?
Seafarer's Family Restaurant, run by the Halterman family in Manquin, Virginia, was featured in the fifth episode of Season 3, airing February 4, 2020. The restaurant had been built by patriarch Steve Halterman with his wife Jean, known to regulars as "Momma Seafarer," after Jean helped him open the business while their daughter Amber recovered from a car accident and Steve underwent emergency surgery of his own soon after opening. By the time of the episode, sisters Amber and Autumn were clashing over the direction of the business, and the seafood-heavy menu had drifted toward serving less seafood than customers expected. Ramsay brought in Hell's Kitchen season three winner Rock Harper to mentor the young head chef, Amber's son Logan, while the family worked through their disputes on camera. Following the relaunch, the restaurant was renamed, becoming Halterman's Eatery - Seafarers Family, a change the family says reflected lessons learned from the show even as some longtime customers pushed back against the new look and menu. The business then endured back-to-back setbacks: the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted trade, and in the middle of it, Jean Halterman died of COVID-19 pneumonia, forcing the family to close temporarily while grieving, according to an interview with owner Amber Halterman published by the Visit West Point & King William tourism board (2023-10-04). Amber and her children, including head chef Logan, front-of-house server Kali, and Elijah, chose to keep the restaurant going in their mother's memory, and it has continued operating since, drawing recognition such as a past feature in Southern Living Magazine, best-seafood honors from regional publications, and visits from notable guests including musician Artimus Pyle of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Logan has since built a following for a Sunday brunch he created and for the restaurant's she-crab soup and fish and chips.
