Hot Potato Cafe was a potato-themed BYOB restaurant in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, opened three years earlier by sisters Claire and Kathryn along with their sister-in-law Erin. It appeared in the first episode of Kitchen Nightmares season 3, airing January 29, 2010. The three owners had no professional restaurant background and had put the head chef role in the hands of Claire's 21-year-old niece, Danielle, who also had no formal culinary training. Gordon Ramsay, aware of a harsh local review the restaurant had already received, sampled a hot potato soup he judged gluey, potato skins that turned out to be three weeks old and no longer contained potato, and a shepherd's pie made mostly of mashed potato rather than meat. During the first dinner service, the disorganized kitchen fell behind, and Ramsay grew frustrated enough to announce he was leaving before the three owners, in tears, asked him to stay; he agreed on the condition that they show more initiative. Over the following days, Ramsay had each of the four cooks develop a new potato dish, ultimately choosing one created by Danielle for the new menu, and taught her his recipe for shepherd's pie. To dramatize the restaurant's problem with oversized portions, he had staff throw dozens of takeout containers, representing recent giveaways, against a wall behind the building. After an overnight redesign of the dining room and menu, Ramsay invited back the same food critic whose earlier review had preceded his visit; the critic's follow-up impressions, which Ramsay described as improved, closed out the episode.

The turnaround did not last. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on August 21, 2010 that Hot Potato Cafe had closed, citing a disconnected phone number, a sign on the door, and comments on the restaurant's own social media page, with management confirming the closure as the restaurant's lease was set to expire August 31, 2010. Fan-maintained Kitchen Nightmares summaries state that Danielle left the restaurant before the closure and that quality had already begun slipping back to its earlier standards.
