What happened after Gordon Ramsay's 24 Hours to Hell and Back?
La Serenata was a family-owned Mexican seafood restaurant on Pico Boulevard in West Los Angeles, part of a small local chain founded in 1985 by Jose and Aurora Rodriguez. By the time the fifth episode was filmed in late 2017, the family had already sold two sister locations and Aurora's own home to keep the flagship afloat, and conflict between Aurora and her son Marco Sr. over modernizing the restaurant was spilling into the dining room. Ramsay's hidden cameras documented a server so overheated he visibly sweated into a bowl of soup served to a customer, cross-contamination in the kitchen, and expired ingredients, including spoiled kale.
Over the 24-hour turnaround, Ramsay's team gave the dining room a contemporary redesign, introduced a streamlined menu built around dishes like mussels, and worked to repair the family's relationships — including a one-on-one conversation with Aurora about her late husband and a reminder to Marco Sr. of his father's legacy via old video footage. The relaunch impressed both returning regulars and food critics invited to the reopening. Family habits proved hard to shake, however: an account on realitytvupdates.com states that after the episode's July 2018 airing, Marco Sr. and Aurora drifted back toward their earlier menu and management style relatively quickly, while Marco Jr. wanted to keep more of Ramsay's changes in place.
Even so, the restaurant kept operating successfully, weathering a kitchen fire in 2021 without closing permanently. The restaurant's official website, now branded "La Serenata de Garibaldi" at "La Serenata Cantina," describes an unbroken family history from the original Boyle Heights kitchen through today's Pico Boulevard location, though the original Boyle Heights address itself has since closed under separate ownership. The site also notes the family's cooking has drawn attention from Food Network in the years since, and lists live online ordering, reservations, and a current hiring page.
