As of October 2026, Sea Shell Motel has closed — confirmed via Yelp, June 2026.

What the source shows: Re-checked 2026-09-21: no live business website was found under likely domain names, and the existing Yelp source is not renderable via automated fetch; the absence of any active web presence is consistent with the prior finding that it is permanently closed, so the closed status is retained unchanged. What happened after Hotel Impossible?

Hotel Impossible (Travel Channel) featured the Sea Shell Motel in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the episode 'See Smell by the Seashore,' which aired 2015-10-20 (S6E8). The episode centered on a family-owned, oceanfront motel at 2301 Atlantic Avenue that host Anthony Melchiorri worked to turn around. According to Coradi Contracting, a contractor that worked on the show's renovation, the property was renamed the Surfline Beach Hotel as part of the Hotel Impossible makeover. Public directories from the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission and the Virginia Tourism Corporation continued to list a Sea Shell Motel at the same Atlantic Avenue address in subsequent years.

That is no longer the case. Google's listing for the Sea Shell Motel at this address marks it permanently closed. A Yelp listing for the property, updated 2026-06, similarly marks it permanently closed. A separate business, Seashire Inn, operates under its own name and website and is not the same listing as the Sea Shell Motel. No dated source gives a specific closure date or explains why the motel stopped operating after its post-renovation run as the Surfline Beach Hotel. Facebook posts from the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce and discussion on a Wildwood community Facebook group reference the property's history and its closure without providing a dated closure announcement of their own.
