What happened after Best Thing I Ever Ate?

The Cooking Channel's 'Best Thing I Ever Ate' featured Tomaso's Pizza's Mombo Combo, a deep-dish pie topped with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives, and Italian sausage, according to The Gazette of Cedar Rapids. Tom Carfrae opened the original Tomaso's storefront in 1996 after selling pizzas from home, and the business is now run by his son Nick and daughter-in-law Holly Carfrae. The Gazette reported that Tomaso's closed its Edgewood Road NW storefront and opened a larger location at 2706 First Ave. NE at the end of March, offering New York thin, Chicago deep dish, and Detroit deep dish styles alongside local beer and wine.

Yelp's business listings, updated in 2026, show the Edgewood Road NW address marked permanently closed while the First Avenue NE location remains active. The Gazette also noted that a separate Tomaso's franchise location, at 212 Edgewood Road NW, did not renew its franchise agreement and is now Roscoe's Pizza.
